AP gets serious about utilising Begumpet airport

Revival plan: A file photo of an aerial view of the Begumpet airport

Our Bureau

Hyderabad, July 9 The Andhra Pradesh Government is seriously considering utilising the Begumpet Airport, which was closed for Civil Aviation Operations since midnight of March 23 for activities like general aviation services and conducting air shows.

The Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, has recently written a letter to the Union Minister for Civil Aviation, Mr Praful Patel, to use the facilities of Begumpet Airport for airport activity during times of national emergency or any other time with aircraft owned or operated by Indian Air Force or other armed forces.

This would be in line with the provisions published in the Gazette of India dated 20.3.2008.

General aviation services (other than those relating to commercial aircrafts, charter flights, and aircraft hired or operated under commercial arrangements) may continue to be provided at the existing airport at Begumpet, Hyderabad, not withstanding the exclusion of Civil Aviation Operations for commercial aircrafts, the Chief Minister said.

Letter detail

In the letter, Dr Reddy said that considering the growth of the aviation sector in India, and Hyderabad, in particular, emerging as a major destination, it was appropriate to project the city as an aviation hub.

For this purpose, the Chief Minister proposed to utilise Begumpet Airport for hosting air shows.

Pointing to some of the organisations hosting air shows nationally and internationally, the Chief Minister requested the Union Minister to advice the Ministry of Civil Aviation to take up the matter with these organisations.

The organisations mentioned include Farnborough International Ltd, a subsidiary company of UK’s aerospace trade association; Aviation Development Australia Ltd; Aerospace Australia Ltd; GIFAS, the French aerospace industries association; and UK Royal Air Force.
