Broadband States - Andhra Pradesh BSNL to test launch WiMax in Vizag Our Bureau Visakhapatnam, July 9 BSNL has chosen Visakhapatnam, besides Pune and Ahmedabad, for the test-launch of WiMax (worldwide interoperability facility for microwave access), due to the growth of broadband connections in the city during the past few years, according to Mr G.V Ramakrishna, Deputy General Manager. In an interview, Mr Ramakrishna, promoted and transferred to Shillong as the General Manager (Marketing), said there were at present 16,000 broadband connections in the city and “there is demand for more. We are unable to provide the connections, as the capacity of the telecom exchanges has been fully utilised.” He said WiMax facility was nothing but wireless broadband connectivity that can be used to provide hi-speed internet access on laptops, mobile phones and even on PCs by connecting a modem at the users’ end. “Fourteen locations have been identified, including the special economic zone at Atchyuthapuram, to provide the facility. The cell towers will be used to install the equipment which will be arriving here by September-end. WiMax will take care of the demand for new broadband connections,” he explained. He added that the target for the current fiscal for giving broadband connections in Vizag area was 49,000 and the facility was being extended to rural areas as well as the interior ones.
