Jet Airways started flying to the Gulf region earlier this year and currently operates services to Abu Dhabi, Doha, Muscat, Bahrain and Kuwait.

New Delhi, July 10 The last bastion of monopoly among Indian carriers that Air India had on flying to Dubai has fallen with the Government clearing the proposal of Jet Airways and 100 per cent subsidiary JetLite to fly there. In addition, a note-verbale has been sent to the Government of Dubai informing them that Air Deccan will be eligible to operate to the Gulf destination from August 26 this year, when the airline completes five years of domestic operations. Currently, the Government rules allow an airline which has completed five years of domestic operations to apply for permission to operate abroad. Air Deccan, which has sought approval for operating a daily flight from Bangalore, will have to seek approval from the Ministry of Civil Aviation before launching operations to Dubai. Dubai is the only global destination to which the Government allows the state owned airline and its subsidiary, Air India Express, to operate flights from India. Official sources told Business Line that the Ministry of Civil Aviation has allowed Jet Airways to operate a daily flight from both Delhi and Mumbai to Dubai during the ongoing summer schedule, while JetLite has been permitted to operate a daily flight from both Hyderabad and Nagpur from the winter schedule of this year. Globally, airline winter schedule starts in October while the summer schedule becomes operational from April. “Both the airlines will now have to wait till they receive communication from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) before they can start flying,” a senior Government official said.
