Tea auction prices up Rs 16.41 a kg in April-May

Kolkata, July 11 In April and May this year, the average auction price of North Indian teas was up by Rs 16.41 a kg at Rs 92.77 a kg as compared to Rs 76.36 a kg in the same period of last year and that of South Indian teas by Rs 4.35 a kg at Rs 57.21 a kg (Rs 52.86 a kg) and the average increase in the auction price of Indian teas thus was Rs 7.68 a kg at Rs 75.59 a kg (Rs 67.91 a kg), according to Indian Tea Association quoting Tea Board figures.

Productin shortfall

The production shortfall during the period is estimated at about eight million kg (mkg) at 90.4 mkg (Rs 98.6 mkg). During the period, the average price increase in South Indian auctions was up by Rs 2.84 a kg at Rs 58.55 a kg (Rs 53.71 a kg).

The production was up by an estimated 11 mkg at 60.7 mkg (49.9 mkg). The all India picture thus is like this: the increase was 6.28 a kg at Rs 69.14 a kg (Rs 62.86 a kg) and the production increase was 2.6 mkg at 151.1 mkg (148.5 mkg), largely due to nearly 11 mkg production increase in South India.

In five months under review, in terms of Indian rupee, the average rise in Chittagong auction price was Rs 7.9 a kg at Rs 56.86 a kg, in Mombasa, it was Rs 19.11 a kg at Rs 92.89 a kg and in Colombo Rs 21.22 a kg at Rs 120.06 a kg, according to ITA statistics.
