Surplus potato stock: Bengal looks to southern markets

Sumit Moitra

Kolkata, July 11

Saddled with excess potato stock, the West Bengal Government is now in active talks with its counterparts in Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Tripura to dispose of some of it, an official of the West Bengal Essential Commodities Supply Corp told Newswire18 on Friday.

Mr Mortaza Hossain, Agriculture Marketing Minister, had recently told the State Assembly that 8.4 million tonnes (mt) of potato was produced in 2007-08 (April-March) because of favourable weather conditions.

This is higher than the earlier revised estimate of 7.5 mt.

“We are currently talking to the State governments of Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and some North-East States, including Tripura, to sell potato as an emergency measure,” the official said.

Jyoti variety

The decision was taken after reports of the farmers being forced to sell the Jyoti variety of potato in some parts of the State at below Rs 1 a kg.

“Jyoti variety, which currently retails at Rs 6 a kg, is being sold by farmers at 70-80 paise a kg in some areas,” the official said.

Talks have just been concluded with Kerala, while negotiations are on with the Andhra Pradesh Government.

“Unless we are able to export potato, the farmers would be in great difficulty,” the official said.
