Environment States - West Bengal Kolkata Corporation mulls private partnership Kolkata generates nearly 3,200 tonnes of solid waste daily, requiring over 100 acres of land for disposal. Our Bureau Kolkata, July 13 The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) is mulling a solid waste management project in private collaboration. The project is expected to generate 54 MW of power daily and would be the first such project to be operational in the country, according to Mr Sushil Kumar Sharma, Member, Mayor-in-Council, KMC. On the sidelines of a conference organised by the NGO Concern for Kolkata here, Mr Sharma said, “We are in preliminary stage of conceptualisation and have recently got proposals from a private company.” KMC would shortly appoint a consultant to evaluate feasibility of the project after which global tenders would be floated, he said, adding that a private player is also interested in technology transfer. A typical project requires around 30 acres of land, he pointed out. Kolkata generates nearly 3,200 tonnes of solid waste daily, requiring over 100 acres of land for disposal. The disposal ground at Dhaba would be inadequate if the amount of waste escalates, Mr Sharma said, stressing the need of waste management projects in such cases. “The projects would also help ease power demand in the city,” he pointed out.
