Urban Development States - Andhra Pradesh Vizag gets Rs 1,575 cr under urban renewal mission Our Bureau Visakhapatnam, July 13 Visakhapatnam city has been sanctioned Rs 1,575.30 crore under the Jawaharlal Nehru Urban National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) to take up 17 major projects including a bus rapid transport system (BRTS), according to Mr S. Jaipal Reddy, the Union Minister for Urban Development. He was speaking here on Sunday after laying the foundation stone for some of the works. The minister said BRTS, on which Rs 452 crore would be spent, would comprise two transit corridors – Simhachalam and Pendurthi – and there would also be a tunnel. The project would facilitate free flow of traffic and lead to development of the areas. He said Rs 240.74 crore would be spent on augmentation of drinking water to peripheral areas in the city and massive housing programmes would also be taken up to provide shelter to the poorer sections. “We are keen on developing the city to measure up to best of standards. The urban infrastructure will get a great fillip with these projects,” he added. In the next phase, he said, Rs 2,137 crore would be sanctioned for the city projects under the JNNURM. He said the growth of the city in recent times was satisfactory, but certain areas needed more attention. Citing an example, he said care should be taken that in all housing projects at least 25 per cent of the developed area should be allocated to the economically disadvantaged sections. Mr K. Ramakrishna, State Commercial Taxes Minister, also spoke. More Stories on : Urban Development | Andhra Pradesh
