Markfed for higher MSP

Hyderabad, July 14

The Andhra Pradesh State Co-Operative Marketing Federation (AP Markfed) has asked Mr Sharad Pawar, Union Minister for Agriculture, to increase the minimum support price (MSP) to Rs 840 from the present Rs 620 a quintal for maize. Mr Ponnam Prabhakar, Chairman of Markfed and Director of NAFED (National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation), said that unless the Government increases the MSP there was a likelihood of drastic reduction in maize growing area. The State produces 31 lakh tonnes of maize, covering an extent of 7.58 lakh hectares, a press release said.
