Agri-Biz & Commodities - Rubber
Rs 600 cr sanctioned for Rubber Board activities

Aravindan

Kottayam, July 14 The Centre has approved Rs 611.40 crore for various development activities of the Rubber Board including rubber cultivation, research and other related programmes under the Eleventh Five Year Plan, said Mr Sajen Peter, Chairman, Rubber Board.

The allocations made for various schemes are Rs 240.39 crore for development of rubber cultivation, Rs 65.05 crore for research, Rs 45 crore each for processing, quality improvement and export development and Rs 42.91 crore for human resource development in the rubber sector.

Production dip

Presiding over the 158th meeting of the Rubber Board, Mr Sajen Peter said priority would be given to reduce the cost of production of rubber and enhance its quality to achieve global competitiveness. The rubber production during the year 2007-08 is 825,345 tonnes and it is 3.2 per cent less than the previous year. The extended monsoon and the widespread abnormal leaf fall etc are the reasons for the shortage in production. On the contrary, the consumption has improved considerably.

During 2007-08, the consumption was 861,455 tonnes which showed a 5 per cent increase over 2006-07. With an increase of 6 per cent during 2008-09 the total production would touch 889,000 tonnes. According to statistics, there would be a shortage of 24,000 tonnes during the same period.

The meeting reviewed the progress of the replanting programme and decided to appeal to the Government to enhance the subsidy from 20 to 30 per cent.
