The airline has not only been permitted to operate a daily flight from Mumbai to Riyadh but also to offer a daily connection between Delhi and Jeddah. Ashwini Phadnis New Delhi, July 14 The Government has permitted Jet Airways to start a daily flight from Mumbai and Delhi to Saudi Arabia, a country to which only Air India was allowed to operate till January this year. Official sources told Business Line that the private sector airline has not only been permitted to operate a daily flight from Mumbai to Riyadh but also to offer a daily connection between Delhi and Jeddah. “The airline has been permitted to start services immediately. It is now for the airline to decide on the starting date,” official sources said. It was in January this year, after the three year moratorium imposed by the Union Cabinet in 2004 on allowing only Air India and its subsidiaries to fly to Saudi Arabia expired, that the Governments of India and Saudi Arabia allowed more than one airline from each side to operate between the two Nations. The decision paved the way for Jet Airways to apply to the Government for being permitted to operate to Saudi Arabia. In December 2004, the Union Cabinet allowed private sector airlines having a fleet of 20 aircraft and five years of domestic operation to operate to most places around the world except the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Oman, Bahrain, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. The ban of not flying to these countries was for three years and expired earlier this year. Saudi Arabia is the second country after Dubai to which Jet Airways has been permitted to operate flights in recent weeks. Jet Airways started flying to the Gulf region earlier this year and currently operates regular services to Abu Dhabi, Doha, Muscat, Bahrain and Kuwait Jet, JetLite allowed to operate to Dubai `We are making a mark on international routes' More Stories on : Airlines | Jet Airways (India) Ltd
