Ashwini Phadnis New Delhi, July 14 In less than a month, domestic air travellers will see a second increase in fares. From Wednesday, Jet Airways will raise the fuel surcharge for flights up to 750 km by Rs 100 to Rs 2,350 and for longer flights by Rs 200 to Rs 3,100. The Madurai-based Paramount Airways will also be upping its fares. The last hike on June 19 was due to an increase in basic fares while this time round it is fuel surcharge which is the culprit. Officials of Jet Airways, who were not available for comment, have informed the travel trade that the revised fuel surcharge will be applicable on all tickets issued or reissued from Wednesday. While officials of most other airlines did not say whether they will also increase the fuel surcharge, in the past whenever one airline has increased prices or the fuel surcharge others have done the same. Soaring ATF costThe move comes as price of aviation turbine fuel (ATF), which accounts for 45-50 per cent of operating costs of most domestic airlines, has steadily been rising. According to the Ministry of Civil Aviation, ATF prices rose from Rs 21 a litre in 2004 to Rs 70 a litre at the moment, while the average fare declined from Rs 6,050 in 2004 to Rs 3,950 during 2007.
