Mr Mukesh Ambani Our Bureau
New Delhi, July 14 Reliance Industries head Mr Mukesh Ambani’s visit to the Capital today was largely marked by speculation. He met important Government functionaries, including the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh. Mr Ambani’s visit and his meeting with the Prime Minister gathered significance in the backdrop of the recent alliance between the Congress-led Government and Samajwadi Party, which is known to be close to the younger Ambani, Mr Anil. Indications are that Mr Mukesh Ambani put forth arguments against demands for levy of windfall tax on oil refineries and oil producers. The market was abuzz that Mr Ambani first met the Prime Minister and followed this with a meeting with the Congress President and UPA Chairperson, Ms Sonia Gandhi, and ministers of other nodal ministries. SP has raised a number of issues including a demand for withdrawal of export oriented unit status for RIL’s Jamnagar refinery and levy of windfall profit tax. It is believed to have suggested that the Prime Minister should intervene to bring peace between the two Ambani brothers. Meanwhile, ahead of the trust vote in the Lok Sabha on July 22, the Congress dismissed charges of corporate lobbying. The party spokesman, Mr Abhishek Singhvi, told media persons that demands of any individual or industrial house are in public domain in a democracy. He said it is not that any such representations carry a veto or are agreed upon. Mr Singhvi said, “The demand for windfall tax is not new. It was raised by the Left parties many months ago.” Ambani brothers shoot off letters Reliance: The sibling rivalry continues HC orders status quo on Reliance, RNRL dispute Ambanis’ accord binding on group cos: HC Ambani brothers clash again Mukesh refutes Anil's charges on non-transfer of business control More Stories on : Corporate Disputes | Politics | Reliance Industries Ltd
