Nuclear deal

This is with reference to the editorial “The nuclear option” (Business Line, July 12) and the letter on the same topic dated July 14.

No government can be permanent in both India and the US.

And a successor government in either, or both, may have different perceptions and ideologies on any important issue; thus, it should not be tied down to an international agreement, whatever be the benefits accruing from it.

Moreover, the present agreement can be used by the US to arm-twist India into supporting policies that may not be to India’s liking. The interest displayed by the US could be an indication of some other agenda.

In any case, there is no need for such a great hurry to conclude the deal when nearly half the MPs are against it, notwithstanding its being in the purported national interest, and with a general election not too far away.

Also, equally importantly, large sections of the public are not adequately informed on the finer points of the subject.
