Shipping Samudera Shipping launches new feeder service Our Bureau Kolkata, July 15 Samudera Shipping has launched a new feeder service connecting Haldia and Chittagong ports with Singapore. The new service, known as Chittagong Haldia Express, will offer fortnightly round trips covering the three ports. It will supplement the shipping line’s two existing services, namely, Chittagong Express, which is between Chittagong and Singapore, and Calcutta Haldia Express which is between Calcutta/Haldia and Singapore. ‘Helmuth Rambow’, a 1100-TEU vessel, deployed on the CHX, will call at Haldia on July 17. It left Singapore for Singapore on July 10 on its maiden voyage and is now at Chittagong. Inquiries, however, reveal that the Chittagong Haldia Express will not be of much help in boosting trade between Kolkata/Haldia and Chittagong ports. The cargo inducement on the Chittagong-Haldia leg of the service leaves much to be desired. But despite some cargo inducement between Haldia and Chittagong, few Indian exporters to Bangladesh will be keen to avail themselves of the train service as transit time to Chittagong from Haldia via Singapore will be long. More importantly, the cargo inducement on the Haldia-Singapore sector being good, Samudera too will not be interested in loading at Haldia for Chittagong, as to that extent the space on the vessel for Singapore-bound cargo has to be sacrificed which is not welcome. Seaways Shipping had earlier launched a service to Chittagong from Kolkata/Haldia, but it has now become irregular due to lack of cargo inducement in the sector, it is learnt.
