Kharif crops may be hit in 6 States on deficient rains
Our Bureau
Chennai, July 15 Deficient rainfall in 13 out of the 36 meteorological divisions of the country could affect the prospects of kharif crops in Assam, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnatka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.
A ‘Monsoon meter’ or an attempt at tracking the progress of monsoon and vulnerability of crops due to deficient monsoon by NCDEX shows that ragi, moong, groundnut, sunflower, sesamum and castor could be affected.
“The southern States may witness low rains hampering the growth of kharif crops further,” said NCDEX in a note.
For the week ended July 9, there was a 20 per cent deficient rainfall against the normal 63.7 mm.
Vulnerability
NCDEX has also come out with a vulnerability matrix, which shows sunflower to be highly vulnerable. With Gujarat receiving deficient rainfall, groundnut and castor crops face problems. The situation with regard to other crops such as bajra, maize and rice seem to be currently under control, though their vulnerability has increased during the last two weeks.
