Climate & Weather Agri-Biz & Commodities - Climate & Weather ‘Downdraft’ tripped monsoon? Vinson Kurian Thiruvananthapuram, July 15 The long break of monsoon rains in the peninsula needs to be studied but it may also be related to the ‘downdraft’ related to a passing Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) wave of anomalous east-bound precipitation, according to Prof Yamagata. The MJO wave travels in periodic bursts from Africa towards east into the southwest Indian Ocean and further into the Pacific. It is well recognised as a key source of untapped predictability in the tropics – alternatively revving up or `tripping’ regional rainfall patterns along the way. One such wave was in evidence during early June and was widely sees as having masterminded excess precipitation over the west coast as also sending monsoon racing into northwest India. This activity had ground to an abrupt halt on June 16. MJO affects a wide range of tropical weather such as the onset and breaks of monsoons and the formation of tropical cyclones. But it is prone to ‘self-suppression’ processes in deep convection, including convective downdrafts, which can work against precipitation at the lower levels. Convective downdrafts have been observed to significantly affect the lower-tropospheric temperature and moisture budgets of tropical convective systems. This angle needs to be studied through deeper analysis of the various factors at play during this crucial phase of the monsoon. – Disquiet in South drains rain surplus to 10% Monsoon stays muted over peninsula More Stories on : Climate & Weather | Climate & Weather
