US poll may not impact outsourcing, says Nasscom

Our Bureau

Hyderabad, July 17 The US presidential election is unlikely to impact outsourcing as both the candidates have hinted at globalisation and outsourcing as an economic reality, according to Mr Som Mittal, President of National Association of Software and Services Companies (Nasscom).

The circumstances under which political campaigns were driven in 2003 and 2008 are different. During 2003, there were grave concerns of job losses in the backdrop of dotcom burst and slowdown due to 9/11 incident.

“The job losses now are from segments such as manufacturing and financial services. Going by the benefits some of the US corporations have had with centres in India, we do not see much impact,” Mr Mittal said.

In fact, Web-sites of top 6 tech firms in the US have more than 20,000 job vacancies listed, showing potential for business, he said.

Upbeat on target

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of Nasscom event on Leadership Role for Women in IT, Mr Mittal said that Nasscom was confident the industry would achieve the next $40 billion in exports without much difficulty. However, challenges such as increasing the employable talent pool and scaling up the value chain remained.

Report with IIM-A

Nasscom, in partnership with Indian Institute of Management-Ahmedabad, is set to release a report within a couple of weeks on the role of women in the tech sectorand the way forward.

This will be extremely relevant as the sector currently employs 45 per cent women in BPOs and about 18 per cent in IT services at the entry level.
