New Delhi, July 19 Toyota’s India Chief has said that the country required to improve its cost competitiveness.

The remark comes at a time when some of the global automakers are flocking here to source auto parts and leverage its engineering talent to develop their car models.

“When we say cost competitiveness, it is the edge that the domestic suppliers need to have in providing quality products at a certain cost,” said Mr Hiroshi Nakagawa, Managing Director, Toyota Kirloskar Motor, the joint venture between the Japanese car maker Toyota and Kirloskar Motors.

Product quality

Earlier, the Hyundai President, Mr H.S. Lheem, also made similar comments on the quality of products from the lower rung of Tier-II and Tier-III component makers.

Mr Nakagawa was talking on the sidelines of traffic safety education programme launched by Toyota to educate school children on road safety.

New Corolla

Toyota is planning to launch a new model of its premium sedan Corolla. He declined to give any specific details about the company’s new product launches.

On its upcoming small car project, the company’s Managing Director said, “We are in the final stages of deciding on our suppliers”.
