7 fishermen to get training in Vietnam

Chennai, July 19

The tsunami relief committee of Rotary District 3230 is sending seven fishermen from the coastal district of Tamil Nadu to Vietnam for a three-week programme on different facets of fishing. Addressing the media, the committee’s Chairman, Mr Benjamin Cherian, said the fishermen will learn several methods including long line deep sea fishing, sea farming, processing and methods of value addition besides nuances of marketing. The entire cost of the programme is borne by the committee, he said. The concept was initiated by the former Chairman and Director of MPEDA, Dr M. Sakthivel, after his recent visit to Vietnam. He said despite having one - third of coastline length of India, Vietnam produces three million tonnes of fish worth $ 6 billion, half of which is exported. Though India’s fish production is double than that of Vietnam, it is only marginally higher in value – at $ 7 billion – only a third of which is exported.
