The Hindu Business Line : Good liquoring CTCs see demand at Kolkata tea sale

Last week, good liquoring CTC teas sold readily at around last levels while the remainder were irregularly lower in line with quality, according J. Thomas & Company Pvt Ltd., the tea auctioneers. There was fair enquiry from the major blender and Tata Tea while Western India and other internal and local sections offered good support. Exporters operated primarily for the bolder brokens, fannings and Pekoe Dusts.

Darjeeling offerings met with good demand. Better and medium whole leaf tended irregularly lower following decline in quality, while plainer sorts remained steady around last. Brokens were irregularly easier. Better fannings were around last, remainder irregular. Good support from traditional exporters. The UK, Continent and Japan were selective. Good support from a major blender. Local dealers operated on the smaller grades.

Orthodox teas saw strong demand with whole leaf and larger brokens firm to dearer. Smaller brokens were steady. Fannings tended irregularly lower following quality.

West Asia and the CIS continued to operate actively while the continent operated on the tippy sorts.

There was a good support from the major blender and local dealers.

CROP

Leaf intake continued to be well below that of the corresponding week of the previous year.

INTERNATIONAL

The Mombasa market met with good demand at firm to dearer rates, particularly for the brighter sorts. Egyptian and Afghanistan packers lent very strong support while Pakistan and Russia packers showed less interest with maintained activity from Kazakhstan, Yemen and other West Asian countries.

The UK showed more interest but remained selective while Sudan was not so forceful. Somalia was less active at the lower end of the market.

The Colombo auction saw strong demand at dearer rates for all sorts except the poorer varieties and OPs which were irregularly lower. There was strong demand from traditional exporters.
