Accidents String of accidents in June Our Bureau According to eyefortransport.com, freight trains in various parts of the world were involved in a string of accidents in June. In Iowa, in the US, a freight train derailed near Guttenburg and two wagons carrying ethanol derailed, but were not leaking. Five wagon spilled grain and four engines fell into the Mississippi river, leaking thousands of gallons of fuel and transmission oil. The accident is attributed to rain causing embankment slide. An 11-car freight train derail ed near Brettonwood, Washington County, due to break in the rail track. Seven of the cars were empty while the other four carried general non-hazardous cargo. In Canada, 41 cars of a 90-car freight train derailed, forcing the Canadian National Railway Co to swing into repair work. The cause of the accident, still being investigated, could be due to bad weather. In another incident, a freight train lost a wheel and derailed and the five cars spilled their cargo of grain on the tracks. The problem, it is felt, could be with the wheels as an earlier investigation had identified a large number of potentially faulty wheels, many of which were in service. In South Siberia also, freight trains were involved in accidents causing several casualties. The report in fact is replete with instances of train accidents covering both freight trains and air cargo carriers.
