Railways Howrah rail link partially restored Our Bureau It is nearly a month now since the rail links between West Bengal and Orissa were cut off by floods, throwing normal trains services on the Howrah-Chennai route out of gear, also affecting in the process, the services, both passenger and freight, from Howrah to several other destinations in Orissa, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. The flood waters having receded, the repair work has since been undertaken in full swing by South Eastern Railway; but, the services have resumed o nly partially. So serious was the damage that only partial restoration of the links has been possible so far. It will be some more time before full restoration can take place. A communiqué by SER suggests that the cancellation of as many as 32 trains, imposed immediately after the floods, will continue to be in force at least for one more week. The movement of freight trains on the route too has suffered, because even when the partial resumption of services takes place, the passenger trains always get priority over freight trains. Diversions as well as short termination of several services have been arranged to cope with the crisis, but past experiences show that diversions do not always work due to various reasons and the short termination often evokes angry reactions from the affected people.
