Kharif sowing area in Maharashtra halved

Owing to poor rains for past two weeks, sowing area in the current Kharif season has almost reduced to half compared with that of last year.

According to the data available with the State Agriculture Ministry, sowing has only taken place in 32.9 per cent of the total cultivable area by Friday. In the comparable period last year, the sowing was 57.4 per cent.

Of the total area under cultivation for cereals, sowing has taken place in 20.8 per cent area. Last year the figure was 42.7 per cent. Similar is the condition of the pulses, currently sowing has taken place in 22.3 per cent of the total area under cultivation. In the comparable period last year, the sowing was 52.7 per cent.

Sowing for oil seeds is considerably higher at 55.5 per cent of the total area under cultivation. Last year, the sowing was undertaken in 83.8 per cent of the total area. Sowing for cotton is alarming low at 39.2 per cent of the cultivable area. Unlike other crops which are sowed in June –July, sowing for cotton in Maharashtra starts in the May. In the comparable period last year, the sowing was completed in 66.7 per cent of the area.
