New Delhi, July 20 CNG retailer Indraprastha Gas Ltd (IGL) may soon overcome a regulatory hitch on its operations front. The Petroleum Minister, Mr Murli Deora, on Sunday said that he had spoken to the oil regulator to allow IGL to expand its network to meet the targets for the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

Oil regulator Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) had asked ICL to stop all incremental work in the absence of authorisation letter from the Government for commencement of operations in the National Capital Region (NCR) in 1998.

PNGRB considers IGL as an “illegal” entity due to the absence of specific Government consent. Mr Deora said that this issue would be resolved in a week’s time and that there was no standoff with the regulator.

“IGL was formed prior to PNGRB coming into being. It had Government consent to begin selling CNG to automobiles and piped natural gas to households. I had met PNGRB Chairman (Mr L, Mansingh) on yesterday and apprised him of our stand,” Mr Deora said.

Meanwhile, the Delhi Chief Minister, Ms Sheila Dixit, said that the State Government would provide land for building 50 new CNG dispensing stations to ease the load on the existing ones. IGL’s 163 outlets in Delhi had, in the past few weeks, seen long queues on account of increase in demand.

IGL had seen daily sales jump to 13.6 lakh kilograms (kg) from 11.5 lakh kg a month ago due to private cars converting to CNG on account of rise in petrol and diesel prices.

“We will be requesting the Government of Uttar Pradesh and Haryana to give the required clearances to IGL for opening CNG stations,” Mr Deora said.

The Oil Ministry had directed IGL to work on a “war footing”, in coordination with concerned agenciesto ensure adequate CNG was supplied to vehicles and thereby resolve the problem of long queues at filling stations.
