Hyderabad, July 20

In a few years from now, doctors could unravel the mysteries behind ulcerous diseases, inflammatory bowel diseases and the cause of lower prevalence of H. Pylori induced gastric cancer in Indians.

The Asian Institute of Gastroenterology (AIG) has set up the Institute of Basic Sciences and Centre for Translational Research here.

Inaugurated by Prof FOCK Kwong Ming, President of Asian Pacific Association of Gastroenterology, here on Sunday, the centre would apply the findings of basic sciences research in development of new understanding of disease mechanisms, diagnosis and therapeutics. Addressing reporters after the inauguration, Dr D. Nageshwar Reddy, who heads AIG, said the institute spent Rs 20 crore initially on the project. “Over a period of time, we will be investing Rs 150 crore on the project,” he said.

Several hospitals, Department of Biotechnology, pharmaceutical companies and a few private donors have agreed to chip in.

“The focus of research will be on looking at causative factors of local diseases, while emphasising on preventive aspects like vaccination,” Dr Reddy said.

The centre of excellence would also conduct research on application of stem cells to tackle end-stage liver and pancreatic diseases.
