Freight revenue helps Rlys post 15.5% rise in June earnings

Our Bureau

New Delhi, July 21 With total revenues of Rs 6,223.69 crore, Indian Railways registered a 15.5 per cent growth in June 2008 year-on-year.

This was supported by an 18.77 per cent growth in freight earnings, which account for 68 per cent of share of total railway revenues. Freight earnings touched Rs 4,293.32 crore in June. The passenger revenues, which account for 28 per cent revenue share, witnessed a growth of 10.39 per cent touching Rs 1,695.22 crore in June.

The high growth in freight revenues is basically due to a mix of growth in loadings volume and several rounds of freight rate increases (through its dynamic pricing policy) introduced by Railways during the year.

On a cumulative basis, during the three months of current fiscal (April 1 to June 30, 2008), Railways registered total earnings of Rs 19,549.29 crore, up 18.04 per cent from Rs 16,561.44 crore during the same period in the previous fiscal.

The total goods earnings went up by 22.05 per cent during the first quarter touching Rs 13,470.11 crore (Rs 11,036.23 crore).
