Lakshadweep plans to get more vessels

Our Bureau

Visakhapatnam, July 21 The Union Territory of Lakshadweep has added 10 vessels to its shipping fleet during the past one year, taking the total to 21, and is planning to add more to improve connectivity with the mainland, according to Mr B.V. Selvaraj, the Administrator.

He told reporters at a press meet here on Sunday night that the Lakshadweep administration had added 10 vessels to the fleet during the past one year, the latest acquisition being m.v Kavaratti, built by the Hindusthan Shipyard Ltd and delivered here on Sunday.

“Shipping is the lifeline of our islands and the acquisition of 700-seater passenger ship — Kavaratti — is a huge advantage. It will give a terrific boost to the island’s economy and tourism,” he said.

Mr Selvaraj said there were plans to acquire another 400-passenger vessel and estimates were being finalised.

He said the Lakshadweep islands are very much akin to Maldives and tourism would be the mainstay of the islands in future.
