Locally heavy rain in TN, Karnataka

Thiruvananthapuram, July 21 Southeasterly winds blowing in from the adjoining Bay of Bengal have fetched welcome parcels of moisture into coastal and interior south peninsula getting precipitated as scattered, isolated moderate and locally heavy rains.

North interior Karnataka has been the only Met sub-division to miss out on these rains so far, according to an India Meteorological Department (IMD) update on Monday.

But forward-looking model predictions still converge on the possibility of the warming seas and favourable winds helping a trans-peninsular trough to develop pushing a belt of poorly organised thunderstorms into the north.

A cyclonic circulation forecast to spin up over the Andhra Pradesh coast is expected to steer the proceedings. The Noida-based National Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF) sees the circulation materialising around Friday.

In this manner, rains are expected to filter into north interior Karnataka, adjoining Madhya Maharashtra and Marathawada in phases. Vidarbha and parts of Telengana too, have witnessed disparate amounts of rainfall over the past day or two.

RAINS IN PATCHES

An IMD update on Monday said that moderate to heavy overnight rainfall was recorded at a few places in Tamil Nadu, Lakshadweep, coastal and south interior Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.

Among the locations recording very heavy rainfall (in brackets in cm) were Tiruchi (16); Tiruchi airport (13); Subramanya, Dakshina Kannada district (10); Kamareddy, Nizamabad district; Gubbi, Tumkur district; and Bangalore (8 cm each) and Agumbe and Hosekote, Bangalore rural (7 cm).

Some of the other districts witnessing good rainfall during this period were Cuddalore, Thanjavur, Pudukottai, Madurai and Erode in Tamil Nadu; West Godavari and Nellore in Andhra Pradesh; and Tumkur in Karnataka.

According to the Met Centre, Chennai, the outlook until Wednesday suggested that rain or thundershowers are likely to occur at many places over Kerala, coastal and south interior Karnataka, coastal Andhra Pradesh and Lakshadweep.

Thundershowers are also likely at a few places over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, north interior Karnataka and Telangana, while isolated rain has been forecast for Rayalaseema.

The trend is suggestive of a slowly growing trail of hit-or-miss thundershowers, however erratic in terms of lateral spread.

Meanwhile, IMD forecasts ventured to suggest a fresh wave of rainfall along the west coast from Thursday apparently from a strengthening offshore trough.
