Philippines co eyeing bulk-storage market in Bengal

Kolkata, July 21

The Philippines-based GrainPro, a post-harvesting technology provider for food grains, is eyeing the bulk-storage market in West Bengal to sell their storage equipment.

Addressing a news conference here on Monday, Mr Tom De Bruin, Vice-President, Marketing and Sales, GrainPro, said the company would be specially focusing on storage of tea, a highly hygroscopic commodity prone to wastage due to moisture.

Mr Ravi I.S. Verdi, Chairman and Managing Director of BA Agro Hermetic Preservation Systems, the marketing partner of GrainPro in India, said, “A large quantity of tea produced in the State gets condensed due to storing in moisture-permeable wooden boxes, resulting in degradation in colour, taste and aroma.” “The losses out of improper storage of different food grains ranged between 4-15 per cent,” he pointed out. The plastic bags used by GrainsPro called Cocoons have the capacity ranging between 5 tonnes and 1,000 tonnes. The bags could replace toxic preservatives for storage of other agriculture commodities such as paddy, pulses, spices, herbs and coffee, Mr Verdi said.

The company was in talks with a number of warehouses in the State for supplying their product, he added.
