Sikkim Chamber opposes plan to raise professional tax ceiling

Sarikah Atreya

Gangtok, July 21 The Sikkim Chamber of Commerce (SCC) has opposed the Union Government’s plan to raise the ceiling on professional tax from the present Rs 2,500 to Rs 7,500 per annum, stating that the rise will be steep.

According to a press release issued by Mr S.K. Sarda, President, SCC, the Union Government is thinking to bring a proposal in this regard before the Cabinet for immediate consideration.

“The professional people like lawyers, doctors, self-employed persons, shopkeepers, out of their hard work are already contributing a lot to the coffers of the State and the Union Governments. It is, therefore, not proper that the citizens who are already burdened with high inflation and high taxes should be asked to cough up more taxes,” Mr Sarda said in a release urging the Centre not to go ahead with the proposal to enhance professional tax.

He also called upon all national trade and professional bodies to oppose the move.

The SCC president felt that it would be better if the number of taxes were reduced, tax rates made moderate and collection process simpler with no hassles and harassments.
