Taxation ‘Review impact of taxes on poverty reduction’ Our Bureau Chennai, July 21 The Madras Chamber of Commerce and Industry says the Government must review whether direct and indirect taxes levied have objectively contributed towards improving living conditions of the marginalised sections of society. Doles, freebies, sops are not an answer and are not permanent or even viable methods to alleviate poverty. Human beings need to be gainfully engaged and a rewarding vocation should be the aim of the Government. “Sadly very few principles of governance are in evidence in the schemes announced and promoted,” a press release issued by the Chamber says. Citing a survey on direct taxes conducted by the Madras School of Economics, the Chamber says this level is high, wasteful and disproportionate to developed countries. A study needs to be done on indirect taxes to check if compliance cost here too parallels that of direct taxes. More Stories on : Taxation | Economy | Industry Associations
