Record prize money for Pune racing season

A record amount of Rs 6.13 crore as prize money is on offer for the 29-day long Pune racing season 2008 commencing on July 24 through till October 25.

Dr Cyrus Poonawala, Chairman, Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC), said that for the second consecutive year, sponsorships had been obtained for all 13 weekends of racing.

The gross contribution is around Rs 80 lakh, with the Nanoli Pune Derby being the season’s top race with a contribution of Rs 20 lakh.

Several firsts

The 2008 racing season will be marked with several firsts, Dr Poonawala said, including payment of 10 per cent performance incentive to owners, and subsidising of some of their costs.

exclusive ceremony

The champions will be honoured at an exclusive ceremony on the last Saturday of October.

The season will feature participation by 66 jockeys, with 11 outstation and two foreign jockeys amongst them.

The number of horses stationed in Pune during the period will be 1,250.

Six races for juveniles will carry a purse of over Rs 10 lakh, while races for two-year-old horses have been reinstated this season after a gap of several years.
