Rupee a tad lower


Mumbai, July 22

The rupee depreciated marginally against the dollar on a day that witnessed highly volatile trading. The domestic currency opened at 42.66/68 and closed at 42.73/74, against the previous close of 42.67/68. In intra-day trade, it touched a high of 42.58/59 and a low of 42.84/85. Big corporate houses were seen buying dollars that led to the weakening of the domestic currency, said a dealer with a private bank. Upswing in the stock market helped the rupee recover its losses a nd close at 42.73/74, he added. The Sensex closed 254 points higher at 14,104, against the previous close of 13,850. In the forward market, the 6-month premium closed lower at 5.17 per cent (5.23) and the 12-month ended at 4.34 per cent (4.40).
