Mangalore, July 22

Nearly 600 traders at Bunder area in Old Mangalore have got a temporary reprieve with the Karnataka Minister for Agriculture Marketing keeping in abeyance the decision to shift the market sub-yard of Agriculture Produce Marketing Committee (APMC) from Bunder to Baikampady in Mangalore.

Replying to a question raised by Mr N. Yogish Bhat, Mangalore (South) MLA, in Karnataka Legislative Assembly on Monday, Mr Shivaraj S. Tangadagi, Minister for Agriculture Marketing, said that the Government has decided to keep in abeyance the decision to shift the market sub-yard from Bunder to Baikampady in Mangalore following a representation from the traders of Bunder area in this matter.

Traders and people’s representatives from the region had quoted problems associated with shifting the trade to Baikampady, which is on the outskirts of the city.

The latest announcement of the Minister keeps in abeyance the earlier government order dated April 27, 2007, where the Bunder area was denotified as the market yard.

The Minister informed the House that in a letter dated July 16, the Government has given its approval to declare Bunder as the market sub-yard of Agriculture Produce Marketing Committee (APMC) and to initiate steps to issue licences to traders to carry out their operations from there.

Following this, the Director of Agriculture Marketing issued a notification on July 19 seeking suggestions and objections on the matter. Later, the Government decide on declaring Bunder as the market sub-yard of APMC, the Minister said.

Mr G.G. Mohandas Prabhu, Honorary Secretary of Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) and President of Kirana Merchants’ Association, told Business Line that the Government has granted both the prayers of traders from Bunder area. First one is the sub-yard status for Bunder area, and the second one is the renewal of licences for traders operating there.
