New Delhi, July 22 The Defence Minister, Mr A.K. Antony, on Tuesday said that India’s focus should be towards creating a self-reliant defence industrial and technological base that will enable the country to play its rightful role in the emerging world order.

Delivering the inaugural address at a two-day international technology seminar on ‘Future infantry combat vehicle and future main battle tank’ the Minister said that the Government has taken a number of initiatives to encourage domestic industry to participate in the modernisation of the Armed forces.

“These initiatives are reflected in the Defence Procurement Policy (DPP) 2006. A revised DPP 2008 is being released shortly that will reflect our commitment to transparency as well as encourage indigenous industry,” Mr Antony said.

The seminar has been jointly organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry and Directorate General Mechanised Forces of the Indian Army.

The Minister said that though the domestic industry has matured and gained considerable expertise in producing frontline equipment, it needed to develop and master key technologies in the quest for self reliance.

“Our research and development needs to be carefully nurtured and exploited in both the public and private sector. A strong, healthy and mutually beneficial partnership between public and private sector will be crucial in delivering the defence capability and in sustaining a powerful domestic industrial base for the future.

“It should be our endeavour to achieve maximum synergy between the defence, public and private sectors in order to create a competitive defence technology edge and strengthen the domestic defence industry base,” Mr Antony said.
