Ziemann plant at Pune to make brewery equipment

The company has set up a wholly-owned subsidiary, and the new plant, which involves a financial outlay of around Rs 50 crore, is expected to go on stream in September.

Alka Kshirsagar

Pune, July 23 German brewery equipment maker A Ziemann GmbH is setting up a greenfield plant at Kondhapuri near Pune to manufacture original equipment to cater to the brewery business in India, placed at 10 million hectolitres a year and growing at the rate of around 15 per cent.

The company has set up a wholly-owned subsidiary for the purpose, and the new plant, which involves a financial outlay of around Rs 50 crore, is expected to go on stream in September, Mr Yogesh Satoskar, Managing Director, Ziemann India Pvt Ltd, said. This will be Ziemann’s fourth overseas plant after Brazil, France and China.

Amongst the Indian subsidiary’s first clients will be beer maker SABMiller India, which is in the process of setting up a greenfield brewery adjoining an existing facility at Sonepa, Haryana, that will become operational later this year. Ziemann, which both supplies equipment and undertakes contracts on a turnkey basis, has also been commissioned to execute some other projects, Mr Satoskar added.

German base

Interestingly, Ziemann is amongst a host of German companies, primarily small and medium enterprises setting up shop in the Pune region in the next few years.

“The largest concentration of German companies in the country is in the Pune region,” says Mr Zubin Kabraji, regional director, Indo-German Chamber of Commerce, Pune. He places the number of independent (exclusive of joint ventures) German companies present here at around 100 today, and estimates that their number will double in the next two years, involving fresh foreign direct investment of Rs 1,000-1,200 crore.

The region already has a significant German presence, including large companies such as Daimler and Volkswagen on the back of which several auto component manufacturers are setting up base here. Amongst companies Mr Kabaji identified are electrical systems maker Weidmueller and auto chassis maker Bentler, which is shifting its operations here from Bangalore.
