8 firms evince interest in Innovation Park

Hyderabad, July 23 About eight major firms have evinced interest in the proposed Knowledge Innovation Park to be developed by the University of Hyderabad near here to encourage research and development.

The Vice-Chancellor of University of Hyderabad, Dr Seyed E. Hasnain, said that these companies (details to be announced later) are keen to be part of the proposed park being developed in a 50-acre site in the university’s campus in partnership with the Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (APIIC).

The park will be later scaled up to cover a 200-acre site and is being developed with 89 per cent equity of the university and the rest with APIIC.

University contribution

The University of Hyderabad contribution will be in the form of land bank and technology and incubation centre and the infrastructure developed by the APIIC, Dr Hasnain said.

Speaking after signing a memorandum of understanding with Altair Engineering at the campus today, Dr Hasnain said the focus of researchers at the university, which generates about one third of PhDs in the technology sector in the country, is on intellectual property creation.

As a part of IP creation efforts, the University of Hyderabad has signed up with Intellectual Ventures, a Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation initiative, to encourage IP creation leading to patents.

At every stage of innovation, researchers get incentivised and the university will later get royalty for products that come of these innovations.

The university is also setting up a technology business incubator whose objective is to assist researchers in their initiatives and in IP creation, according to Prof. Arun Agarwal, In Charge of Centre for Modelling Simulation and Design.

Altair Engg

Earlier, the university and Altair Engineering entered into a memorandum of understanding to collaborate in research work and education initiatives in the areas of computers and information technology with focus on high performance computing, an area where Altair specialises in.

They also plan specialised courses to groom engineers in the areas of high performance computing requirements.

There is great demand for such exerts where lot of simulation work is handled. These cover areas such as weather modelling, automotives, animation and life sciences research.
