Govt urged to secure release of 2 Indian seafarers held in Korea

Our Bureau

Kochi, July 25 The All India Port and Dock Workers Federation has urged the immediate intervention of the Union Government for the release two Indian seafarers, who were unlawfully detained by the South Korean Authorities at Daesan Port since December 2007.

Mr P.M. Mohammed Haneef, General Secretary of the Federation, requested the Union Minister for Indian Overseas Affairs and Parliamentary Affairs, Mr Vayalar Ravi, to take appropriate steps to make free Capt Jasprit Chalwa and Chief Officer Mr Syam Chethan, of Motor Tanker Vessel Hebei Spirit.

The Korean Authorities detained them for violating their Nations Ocean Pollution Law, when a crane barge accidentally collided with anchored Hebei Spirit at Daesan Port. Though the South Korean Court had acquitted them, the Korean authorities refused to release these seafarers.

He said that the International Shipping Community and the International Transport Workers Federation also urged South Korea to make free the seafarers considering their deteriorating health due to mental agony. Organisations across the world’s shipping industry issued a vigorous joint protest at the unreasonable detention of two merchant ships’ officers saying that such measures are unjustified, and in contravention of the men’s rights.

The shipping community also pointed out that the illegal detention was contrary to the principles agreed to worldwide in the United Nations’ International Maritime Organization and International Labour Organization guidelines on the Fair Treatment of Seafarers in the Event of a Maritime Accident, he added.
