Work on NHPC Teesta project to resume

Sarikah Atreya

Gangtok, July 25 After one and a half months of shut down, the Teesta Stage V power project at Singtam is set to resume work.

The 510 MW power project, commissioned early this year, had run into trouble because of flooding of the Teesta River (near the dam site in Dikchu) and the protective walls of the reservoir weakening.

Power generation had stopped ever since the reservoir had got filled with the unprecedented amount of silt, among other things. The power house had been shut down as it posed a danger to residents of Dikchu Bazaar.

National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) had stopped all work at the project site from June 12 to carry out repairs of the damaged wall of the reservoir in Dikchu.

It is estimated that NHPC has incurred a loss of Rs 58 crore because of the shutdown.

A day’s shutdown means a loss of about Rs 1.30 crore to the NHPC and Rs 40 lakh to the State Government.

Although the NHPC has constructed a new safety wall for Dikchu bazaar, the regular deposition of silt in the dam can again cause problems. Major tributaries of the Teesta like the Tolung Chu and other streams bring in lots of silt which is a cause for concern, according to a NHPC official.
