Industrial belt in Pune facing power shortage

Our Bureau

Pune, July 25 The lack of rainfall in the State is now a cause for worry for the industrial belt in Pune as it is now having a 24-hour power shutdown. The shutdown begins on Thursday morning at six and is restored only on Friday at six in the morning.

This was a decision taken by Maharashtra Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (MSEDCL) that power supply to all industrial estates in the city and the district would be shutdown for 24 hours.

Power supply to all the industrial areas would be cut off except for the express feeders in Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) and for the continuous process industries.

Mr Anant Sardeshmukh, Additional Director-General, Mahratta Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture (MCCIA), said the power shortage of about 5,000 MW is definitely a negative factor for all the industrial units, especially in this critical phase of the economy. This would have a cascading effect on other service also.

“There is an acute shortage of power almost all over the country, even on the power exchanges there are buyers and no sellers. Even if you decide to buy at prohibitive price, you will not be successful. The coal supply has also dropped. Because of the beginning of rainy season, many generators are under maintenance hence not operational; this has all resulted into acute power shortage,” he pointed out.

The current demand of the State is around 12,761 MW. The total generation, including the supply from centre and Ratnagiri generation, is around 8,777 MW and considering the losses etc the load shedding will have to be of 5,284 MW.

“Of course, this is the situation as on July 23, which can change and additional power cut can be enforced. The Pune demand is around 780 MW, total availability is 655 MW and the shortfall is around 125 MW,” he said.
