Climate & Weather Agri-Biz & Commodities - Climate & Weather ‘Low’ sparks rain in Karnataka, Maharashtra
Vinson Kurian Thiruvananthapuram, July 27 True to forecasts, a crucial low-pressure area has formed over west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal on Sunday with prospects of intensification. This capped a buzz that has been growing in the Bay over the past few days bringing long-delayed rains into the interior peninsula. The ‘low’ is expected to cross the Orissa-Andhra Pradesh coast over the next two to three days and help sustain the wet weather over the peninsula into the first week of August. Monsoon ‘low’s have longer shelf life even while being on land, and in the instant case, the west-northwestward movement would cause the system to pour it down along the way till it crosses Gujarat into Pakistan. Thus, the ongoing rainfall would further rev up over south Orissa, south Chhattisgarh, costal Andhra Pradesh coast and later into Maharashtra and the larger interior peninsula. WAIT AND WATCHThe weakening of the system, according to some model forecasts, would prepare the ground for another ‘low’ to spin up in the Bay around August 5. But meteorologists here preferred to wait and watch since back-to-back ‘low’s in such short intervals ‘would take some doing’ to materialise. In Maharashtra, overnight rainfall occurred at most places over south Konkan-Goa, south madhya Maharashtra and Marathawada; at many places over north madhya Maharashtra and south Gujarat region and at isolated places over north Gujarat region and Saurashtra on Sunday. Rain or thundershowers is likely to occur at most places over Konkan-Goa, Gujarat region and Saurashtra and at many places over madhya Maharashtra, Marathawada and Kutch. A warning valid for the next two days said that isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over south Orissa, south Chhattisgarh, coastal Andhra Pradesh and the west coast. The three days that follow would see fairly widespread rainfall continue over the west coast and Lakshadweep while foraying afresh from southeast coast into Vidarbha and Telangana. ACTIVE MONSOONMonsoon has been active also over Telangana, coastal and south interior Karnataka. Rainfall occurred at most places over Telangana, Kerala, Lakshadweep and Karnataka; at many places over Rayalaseema and at a few places over coastal Andhra Pradesh. Isolated rainfall occurred over Tamil Nadu. Forecast until Tuesday said rain or thundershowers are likely to occur at most places over Kerala and Karnataka; at many places over Lakshadweep and Andhra Pradesh; and at a few places over Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. A warning valid for the next two days said that isolated heavy to very heavy rain is likely to occur over coastal Andhra Pradesh, coastal Karnataka and Gnat areas of south interior Karnataka and isolated heavy rain over Kerala, Telangana and north interior Karnataka during the same period. Prevailing active monsoon conditions were despite the presence of a West Pacific typhoon, named Fung-wong, which was toying with the Taiwanese coast on Sunday and was headed north-northeast into eastern China. The rain-driving monsoon trough passed through Anoopgarh, Sultanpur, Ambikapur, the centre of the ‘low’ into the east-central Bay. More Stories on : Climate & Weather | Climate & Weather
