PM assures support to Gujarat; Ahmedabad limps back to normalcy

Virendra Pandit

Ahmedabad, July 28 The Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, on Monday expressed solidarity with the people of Gujarat whose lives have been badly affected by the 16 bomb blasts that ripped across the State’s commercial capital on July 26. He assured that the Centre would provide all possible help to the State Government in tracking the perpetrators of this inhuman act.

Reports reaching here said the Udaipur police arrested four persons in connection with the Ahmedabad blasts. Accompanied by the UPA Chairperson, Ms Sonia Gandhi, the Home Minister, Mr Shivraj Patil, and other leaders, Dr Singh were in Ahmedabad today on a two-hour visit.

Meanwhile, Ahmedabad seemed to be gradually limping back to normalcy, with most of the shops and business establishments opening for business. Industrial areas of Vatva, Naroda, Odhav, and others in the eastern part of Ahmedabad, which witnessed disturbances on Saturday, also opened.

Surat, however, remained largely shut for business today as the diamond and textile industry in the city had decided to close shop as a precaution.

The diamond industry has requested the police to beef up security in highly populated areas of the city.
