Climate & Weather Agri-Biz & Commodities - Climate & Weather Monsoon enters vigorous phase in peninsula
Vinson Kurian Thiruvananthapuram, July 28 The ‘low’ in the Bay of Bengal became ‘well marked’ on Monday, implying a round of intensification, and revved up monsoon to vigorous or active conditions over the peninsula during the last 24 hours. An India Meteorological Department (IMD) update said that the monsoon has been vigorous over coastal Andhra Pradesh and south interior Karnataka, and active over Rayalaseema, Telangana, Kerala and coastal Karnataka. Over the west coast and the peninsular interior, rainfall occurred at most places over Konkan and Goa; and at many places over Gujarat, Madhya Maharashtra and Marathawada. Elsewhere in the region, rainfall occurred at most places over coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Kerala, coastal Karnataka and south interior Karnataka; at many places over Rayalaseema and north interior Karnataka; and at a few places over Tamil Nadu and Lakshadweep. Forecast for the next two days said that rain or thundershowers are likely to occur at most places over Kerala and Karnataka; at many places over Lakshadweep and Andhra Pradesh; and at a few places over Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Isolated heavy to very heavy rain is likely to occur over coastal Andhra Pradesh, coastal Karnataka and the Ghat areas of south interior Karnataka. Isolated heavy rain is also likely to occur over Kerala, Telangana and north interior Karnataka during the same period. HELPFUL WHIRLWhat really held the western end up of the rain belt caressing the Konkan-Mumbai-Gujarat belt and the west-central peninsula was a resident cyclonic circulation over northeast Madhya Pradesh and neighbourhood. On Monday, the circulation had moved west to northwest Madhya Pradesh but had descended to lower tropospheric levels. This is forecast to cause fairly widespread rainfall with isolated heavy falls over north Madhya Maharashtra, Marathawada, Vidarbha, southwest Madhya Pradesh, south Rajasthan and Gujarat during the next two days as well. But its presence is likely to keep the other well-marked ‘low’ at bay for sometime since two major monsoon systems are not known to co-exist over land. On Monday, the well-marked ‘low’ lay over northwest and adjoining west-central Bay and the coastal areas of south Orissa and north Andhra Pradesh. Under its influence, widespread rainfall activity with isolated heavy to very heavy falls is likely over south Orissa and south Chhattisgarh bordering the peninsula to the North-East. The monsoon trough at sea level passed through Phalodi, Kota, Umaria, Champa, the centre of the well-marked ‘low’ and then southeastward into the southeast Bay. The offshore trough continued to run from the Maharashtra coast to Kerala coast. More Stories on : Climate & Weather | Climate & Weather
