Power States - Kerala Power cuts, load-shedding in Kerala to stay G.K. Nair Kochi, July 29 Load-shedding and power cuts might continue in the State as storage levels in major reservoirs remain below 30 per cent of their capacity. “Catchment areas of the major hydroelectric projects received only 53 per cent of normal monsoon rains. Compared with last 10 years’ average rains, which used to build up a storage level enough to generate 6,500 million units (mu), only 3,000 mu could be generated with what is available today,” senior KSEB sources told Business Line. Water level in the main Idukki reservoir rose to 2,305.46 feet on Monday following incessant rains in the region from Saturday last. The storage level on this day last year was 2,369 feet. Since last Saturday, however, monsoon has become active and that has improved the inflow into the reservoirs. Lull in generationThe smaller reservoirs are full and they are being operated for generating power while the major projects – Idukki, Sabarigiri and Edamalayar – are sparingly used. In fact, only one generator out of six is operational at Sabarigiri as all others are either under repair or in disuse following a fire accident some months ago. More Stories on : Power | Kerala
