IJM upbeat on infrastructure projects in India

Ishnapur, Medak (AP), July 29 Malaysian construction and infrastructure company IJM Corp Berhad, through its subsidiary IJM Steel Products, has commissioned a welded wire mesh (WWM) factory at Ishnapur village about 40 km from here.

The company, which has projects worth over Rs 3,000 crore under various stages of execution in roads, housing and projects such as Delhi metro rail, over two years, is upbeat on the infrastructure business opportunity in the country, according to Mr Krishnan Tan, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of IJM Corp.

On the sidelines of inaugurating the new factory, he said this is part of the company’s downstream initiative to encompass a much wider role in infrastructure projects in the country.

More Plants planned

The company is also considering another such plant in Mumbai to address business requirements in the western region.

The WWM factory, set up with an investment of Rs 21 crore, is aimed at providing steel meshes that help in construction of buildings much faster as they replace manual assembly. Apart from creating additional manufacturing lines with this factory, the company plans more centres in India, he said.

WWM for concrete reinforcement is new to the construction industry. The manufactured product comes to the site ready for immediate onsite installation contributing to higher productivity and in quality control. The company maintained that this provides with an ideal and economical reinforcement solution for steel in concrete structures.

The $1.4-billion Malaysian enterprise’s engagements cover several road projects and have thus far executed or are in the process of executing national highway stretch of about 1,000 km. As a part of diversification, the company has set up five manufacturing units for supply of ready-mix concrete and is constructing the sixth one in Mumbai.

Road & Port projects

The road projects include Tada-Nellore, Nandigama-Vijayawada, a streatch near Jaipur, Reva and Satna, Tiruchi to Tindivanam and Vijayawada to Chilakaluripeta. In addition to working on several housing projects in Andhra Pradesh (at Hyderabad and Vijayawada) and in Mumbai, the company is executing work for four major stretches in the prestigious Delhi metro rail project.

“We manage two major ports in Malaysia, which have come through acquisition. Though the focus is on ports in India, the company is keen to step up its presence in various infrastructure projects, including housing and road,” Mr Tan said.
