The Hindu Business Line : Security drill at single point mooring facility in Kochi Port

Kochi, July 30 A mock security drill was carried out at the single point mooring (SPM) facility of BPCL-Kochi Refinery in the Kochi Port area to check the security preparedness and alertness at the port. The drill was performed jointly by the port, BPCL-Kochi Refinery and the Coast Guard.

By the drill procedure, on receiving information that a suspicious boat was intruding into the security zone of the SPM facility located about 20 km off Kochi Port, a team of officers from the Marine Department of the Central Industrial Security Force set out to the location in the Tug Ocean Symphony.

Meanwhile, the Maintenance Vessel manned by the staff and security personnel of Kochi Refinery, positioned at the SPM area, had chased the intruding boat away from the security zone.

Later, another boat was found to be intruding into the security zone. Since that boat refused to move away from the area, irrespective of the efforts made by the Maintenance Vessel and the security personnel who reached there in the Tug, the Coast Guard station was informed.

The Coast Guard swung into action immediately by sending a helicopter and a ship to the SPM facility. On reaching the location, the Coast Guard helicopter took measures to keep the boat away from SPM installations. The Coast Guard vessel reached the location and commandos from the vessel apprehended the boat and the crew immediately.

The drill was supervised by Capt Subhash Kumar, Deputy Chairman of the port; Capt J.J. Alappatt, Harbour Master; Ms D. Shyamala, Commandant CISF, Kochi Port Unit; Mr Sasikumar, Chief Security Officer, Kochi Refinery; and Mr Rajesh, Commandant, Coast Guard.
