Srinivasan, the former Director-General of the CII and Special Adviser to the Institute of Quality set up by the CII. In an interview, he said the main objective of the institute was to promote quality in the Indian industry, combining it with sustainability in the long run, by making available to the industry a holistic model of business excellence. “The CII set up the Institute of Quality in 1988 and over the past two decades we developed the model, taking great pains and taking into account the Indian conditions. Many companies have adopted it and have won accolades and reaped rich dividends. As many as sixteen Indian companies have won Demming price for quality,” he said. He said it was heartening to note that many small and medium enterprises were also getting quality-conscious and adopting the total quality management systems and the business excellence model.
