SSI States - Tamil Nadu Maditssia takes out rally against power cuts Our Correspondent Madurai, July 31 The Madurai District Tiny and Small Industries Association (Maditssia), along with 18 other small industry associations, staged a dharna and took out a rally to the Collectorate and submitted a memorandum to the District Collector on Thursday, demanding total exemption from power cut. The memorandum, among other things, pointed out that the small-scale sector in the State consumed less than 10 per cent of power but provided employment to a larger section of people. The power cut in recent periods has affected them severely, driving them towards closure and rendering many unemployed. Staggered supply of power has resulted in loss of productivity. There are around 15,000 registered units in the district, it said. white paperThe memorandum demanded a white paper on the power position in the State. The diesel generators that remain unused with the larger industries would help generate 3,000 mega watts of power and help avoid the present crisis. The Government must find ways of bringing them to use. The Government should implement the Central Government’s direction of trifurcation of the operations of Tamil Nadu Electricity Board. Till such time surplus power is produced in the State, new high tension connections should be withheld, it said. Festive impactWith the festive seasons in the offing, business for readymade garment units stand affected along with plastic, rubber and other units.
