Shopping States - Karnataka Bangalore malls ‘bouncing back to normalcy’
Anjali Prayag Bangalore, Aug. 1 Bangalore’s malls that experienced a dip in footfalls of more than 30 per cent during the weekend are slowly limping back to normalcy. Garuda Mall, which generally experiences footfalls of around 75,000-one lakh each on Saturdays and Sundays, had only about 50,000 people walking into the mall during the weekend, according to a spokesperson at the mall. Prestige Group’s Forum Mall, close to which a bomb was defused on Saturday morning, saw around 40 per cent dip in footfalls during the weekend. “But people have confidence in the mall and the security measures we are taking to ensure the safety of our customers. We are bouncing back to normalcy after the weekend incident,” says Mr T.G. Vinod, Head - Mall Operations at the Forum. Mr Rajesh Seth, Vice-President - Marketing and Customer Experience Management for Central & Brand Factory at Pantaloon Retail, says the two malls experienced only a 15 per cent dip in footfalls, but the number of car entries was down by 20-25 per cent. “Lot of people preferred to come by public transport,” points out Mr Seth. Meanwhile, the security check process in all the malls has been enhanced. Apart from placing more metal detectors, there is a separate security check at each store entrance in the malls. Other security measures include restricted car entry and deployment of security staff in civilian clothes. “We do not want to scare the customer, but reinforce their confidence in the mall’s security system,” says Mr Seth.
