Tea States - Other States Revival plan for Tripura tea industry Our Bureau Kolkata, Aug. 1 The Tripura Government has joined hands with Tea Board to work out plans for the revival of the State’s tea industry. The thrust of the multi-pronged strategy being finalised will be to bring more areas under tea to boost production, improve productivity of the gardens as well as the quality of tea being produced, revamp the marketing network and, capping it all, to create more jobs for the local people and ensure a better standard of living for those employed in the production and sale of tea, according to Mr Jitendra Chaudhury, Minister of Commerce & Industry, Government of Tripura, here on Friday. Tripura produces about 7.7 million kg of tea annually, mostly CTC variety. There are 58 gardens in the State, of which 56 are now operational. Fourteen gardens are run by workers’ cooperatives and three by Tripura Tea Development Corporation, a State Government organisation. An estimated 12,500 people are employed in these gardens. The average yield/ hectare is 1,100 kg against the national average of 1,900 kg, though there are gardens whose yield is as high as 3,000 kg per hectare. Mr Basudeb Banerjee, Chairman of the Tea Board, pointed out that Tripura has an excellent record in dovetailing of various State-level and central schemes on water supply, sanitation, health and education.
